Jim Burns joined Ivor Arbiter in 1969 and formed Hayman. This 4040 was the only Hayman bass and dates from around ’72/3 with design input from Bob Pearson, woodwork by Jack Golder and features “superflux” double-pole staggered pick-ups.

This bass also stars in the first Bass Wars video! David Greenaway plays Guy’s Hayman 4040 and his own Shergold Marathon – see what he thinks of them both:

This very rare bass guitar, built by Fenton Weill, was part of the Hohner Amazon/Zambesi/Apache range and cost £45 new. Purchased secondhand by Don Holley in 1966 for £10 and bought directly from him for my collection.

Watch the video below to see what ‘Bass Ace’ David Greenaway makes of this Hohner Ambasso:

Probably built by Jim Burns prior to his departure from Supersound in December 1958. However the ’50s radio push buttons’ were almost certainly added later by electrics expert Alan Wootton who was not a guitar player!

Until recently I didn’t have a “lefty” and I didn’t have a twin neck, then I walked into my local secondhand shop and, Hey Presto, I now have both! OK it’s modern and made in China but doesn’t it look great?

You can also hear how great it sounds in this video as played by Adrian Withers:
